Project Highlights: Gail’s Bakery Summertown

Mon, Jun, 2016

The foundation stone to Gail’s Bakery, a store that Londoners know as a haven of heavenly bread was laid when two individuals Ran Avidan and Tom Molnar set out on the quest to find a good loaf in the late 1990s. Their search led them to Gail Mejia who was the number one supplier of delicious bread to a variety of top chefs.

Well, they knew they could not keep her talent away from the high street and so together they set out to introduce the loaves to the rest of London. Once they found what is now known as the first in their chain of bakeries, in Hampstead, Emma King arrived from Australia and joined them in what was the beginning of an artisan bakery.

Years later, they have opened the doors to their latest venture in Oxford Summertown on Banbury Road. The building itself is a reference to Oxford’s rich architectural history, and the architects have worked hard to really make the interiors resonate the decorative paneling of many of the city’s iconic interiors.

The Design

The professionals over at Holland Harvey Architects have done a fabulous job by creating a design which not only allows the bakery to stand out in the historical neighborhood but also, in many ways helps the establishment become a part of it. The shop has been designed to welcome the rusticity of the bakery with a modern twist to really compliment the space.

A refreshing color scheme was chosen for the bakery which was further illuminated with pendant lighting. They opted for classic furniture with a twist to ensure that the place retained the essence of the original outlet in Hampstead. To really add a zing to the traditional architecture and create a more contemporary look, they suggested even more interior options.

Curved worktops and water stations made of grey marquina marble from MKW Surfaces were incorporated to compliment the color scheme of the bakery and make the bakery more inviting to customers.

Furniture and Fittings

The bakery, however homely in its functioning is a commercial establishment and so, one of the foremost objectives here was to create an appealing and inviting space for customers. The furniture for the store is classic resplendent in the elegant décor. This is also the reason why the color green was chosen, to lend the space a fresh and charming feel and a large picture window was put in place to invite in appropriate light.

Further, MKW Surfaces collaborated with Gail’s to furnish the counters with round edged grey marquina marble countertops and water stations at the main counter to display baked goods and merchandise. The Italian made marble has a polished finish which allows the bakery a cosmopolitan appeal.

Walnut colored wood paneling was then introduced to the grey counters to enhance the interior and create a color combination which would entice the patrons. In addition, the durability and sheen of the stone accords an awe-inspiring finish over a period of sustained usage.

As can be seen in the images, the countertops from MKW Surfaces have really added to the whole look and feel of the outlet. What the rounded counters have done exactly is create nooks and corners for the baked goods to be displayed on, alluringly.

In addition to this, the grey marquina marble when paired with the floor to ceiling length display racks and the walnut cabinets lays the foundation to an entrance area which allows the food to be the focus of the whole room. MKW Surfaces has been successful in propelling just the outcome which Gail’s owners desired by delivering quality products at the best prices for their designs.
