Travertine is different to limestone and/or in that it is formed in hot springs rather than being a metamorphic rock. The word ‘travertine’ comes from the Italian ‘travertine’, which is a variation of the word ‘tiburtinus‘, meaning from Tibur’. Its name is also the origin of Tivoli, an area near Rome.
