Granite Do You Know all about Stone Cladding?

Do You Know all about Stone Cladding?

Thu, Sep, 2016 Jesus Alberto Mouzo

Stone cladding or ,a stone wall cladding is a thin layer of real or composite stone, as the name suggests, which happens to be applied to the section of a building. It could also be some other structure that’s made up of a material other than stone. As a part of their original architectural design, stone cladding is sometimes applied to concrete and steel buildings too.

The phrase ‘Stone cladding’ generally refers to lightweight stone products, such as marble, granite, quartzite and engineered quartz. To keep a check on the complete cost of production including the material, the products used in stone cladding are made to fit to lightweight substrates.

The process starts with finding the right base and the most common types of bases that are used in stone cladding are:

  • Timber stud frame
  • Expanded metal mesh
  • Mortar scratch coat.
  • Waterproof barrier
  • Fiber cement sheet

After that, mortar mix (or a manufacturer’s stone adhesive) is used to fix the stone cladding to the wall. In fact, in the United States, while installing the lightweight substrate, ply bracing is used as an alternative to fiber cement sheet instead of a fiber cement sheet.

As an alternative, stone cladding can also be a ceramic or porcelain material such as Dekton or Neolith or for natural stone, a granite or marble that has been quarried and then cut into thin pieces in order to reduce weight for a longer life. With big pieces (mostly used on commercial applications) which are heavier, mechanic fixing is used in case of natural stone cladding to keep it intact. This mechanical means of fixing could be done using shelf angles, or using a product called a stone clip.

Retrofitting stone cladding

This is particularly used in brick-built homes. It can be regarded as inappropriate at times when it makes properties appear out of character with their surroundings.
