How to Take Care of Granite Worktops, Wall Cladding & Flooring?

Care of Granite Worktops

Helpful Advice..

Granite is a naturally found stone, made out of molten rock. It is a much preferred stone for worktops, flooring and wall cladding, owing to its aesthetic appeal, durability and ease of maintenance. If used with proper care, it can stay in a pristine condition for a long time. It is advisable to reseal the stone at least once every 2-3 years.
Although, one of the hardest minerals found on earth, its glassy, granular texture makes it prone to cracks, chipping and other accidental damages. Although chips can be addressed by professional services, cracks are harder to reconstruct. It is advisable to give proper care to granite worktops by using trivets, coaters or cloths for placing hot pots and pans, instead of directly placing it over the stone. This way, the risk of cracks due to thermal shock is reduced.

Heavy materials should not be kept on the surface either. This might cause breakage at the weaker points on the stone surface. Dragging heavy objects across the surface might also be potentially damaging.

Though granite is scratch-resistant to a large extent, avoid using sharp tools, like knives for cutting fruits and vegetables, directly on the worktop. Use a cutting board instead. Also, as a precautionary measure, spillages of staining foods should be addressed immediately before the stains can dry. The stains must be blotted first with an absorbent paper towel or cloth, before wiping with a wet cloth. Well sealed stones will repel almost every stain if cleaned immediately.

The easiest way to take care of granite worktops is to perform a daily cleaning routine. To clean granite worktops, abrasive cleaners should be avoided at all cost. A small amount of warm water with a pH balanced cleaner works best for such stones.

In case the granite has been neglected for a long period, you’d have to invest in heavy duty cleaning. A strong degreaser will take care of granite worktops from most of the stains. For the more persistent ones, a poultice —non-acidic, absorbent clay powder that soaks up the stains—can be used. A poultice might dull the shine of your stone. To restore back the shine, you would have to use marble polish.
