Whilst marble is made out of calcium and dolomite which makes it prone to etching and/or staining, quartzite comprises a substantially different mineral make up. Originally Sandstone, Portobello quartzite is form by being subjected to extreme heat a pressure on the earth’s crust which makes it far less susceptible to such occurrences yet slightly more than granite rocks.

Portobello is classified as a quartzite in Europe and classified as Portobello granite in the USA and China, resulting in different names for the material, across quarries and importers who may at times classify it as a marble or granite.
